The One Piece comic chapter 1102 titled "Kuma's Life" has been released. This chapter delves into the relationship between Kuma and the Straw Hat crew, which has remained a mystery until now. It also narrates the adventures of Bonney as a rookie pirate.
Bonney and her pirate crew continue their search for Kuma. Due to Bonney's ability to manipulate age, her crew is infamous for leaving towns filled with elderly and injured babies wherever they visit.
Even though Bonney is very close to locating Kuma, Kuma cannot meet her due to an agreement he made with the World Government. However, before fulfilling his duties as a Warlord to fight against the Whitebeard Pirates, Kuma manages to secretly see Bonney for the last time without her knowledge.
Luffy's Bounty
Meanwhile, Luffy starts gaining recognition among people after receiving his first bounty for defeating the fish-man pirate Arlong. Monkey D. Dragon, upon learning that Luffy has become a pirate, suddenly decides to head to Loguetown, the next city Luffy is bound for. It seems Dragon also wants to secretly see his son, much like what Kuma did.
Although Bonney's pirate crew is known as one of the worst generations, they only rob from bad people and refuse to help unless absolutely necessary. Bonney uses a piercing on her cheek so her father can recognize her when they meet.
Kuma's Relationship with Luffy
Meanwhile, at Egghead, the production of Pacifista soldiers progresses smoothly. Kuma hears news about a rubber-powered pirates declaring war against the World Government. This echoes the legend of Nika, idolized by Kuma.
The story shifts to Thriller Bark, where Kuma tests the Straw Hat crew's loyalty by demanding Luffy's surrender for the safety of the rest of the crew. Naturally, they refuse to sacrifice their captain.
In Sabaody, Kuma witnesses Luffy attacking a Celestial Dragon, breaking a taboo that hadn't been breached for centuries. Luffy does it to protect a fish-man, prompting an admiral to come to Sabaody to capture him.
To protect Luffy from Kizaru and the Pacifista, Kuma sends all the members of the Straw Hat crew to a safe place. Kuma believes Luffy and his friends aren't yet strong enough to venture into the New World.
Luffy is sent to the Kuja Kingdom on Amazon Lily, an island inhabited by women and the residence of the Warlord Boa Hancock. Here, all the kingdom's warriors master haki. It seems Kuma hopes Luffy will learn haki before heading to the New World.
Kuma's Death
Saturn orders Vegapunk to install a self-destruct mechanism in Kuma's body, in case there's a situation where Kuma goes berserk and cannot be controlled. Vegapunk requests permission to install a circuit that could change someone's personality, but Saturn rejects it.
It's time to erase Kuma's memories. Besides losing his memories, Kuma will also lose his consciousness. This is akin to death. Before dying, Kuma asks Vegapunk to install a program in him. He wants to protect the Straw Hat pirate ship until one of the crew members returns.
Kuma places hope in Luffy to become the savior of the world. He believes Luffy will be the cornerstone to change the world. Kuma copies his memories using the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi power for Vegapunk to study. However, these memories will disappear upon being touched by someone.
Before dying, Kuma watches a flashback of his life, from his childhood, meeting Ivankov and Ginny, joining the revolutionary army, to finally caring for Bonney as his child. Kuma leaves a message for Vegapunk that if he ever meets Bonney, he should wish her a happy 10th birthday.
These memories are eventually seen by Bonney, and now she knows all the actual events. Kuma's memory bubble disappears because Bonney touched it. Thus concludes Kuma's flashback. The next part of the story will continue in two weeks.
